A Table Before Me

In many cultures, it is common practice to come back from work in the evening and find a table set before you. Dinner has been prepared and is being kept warm so when you come you can relax and eat. It is a way of saying you have worked so hard since morning and now it’s time to leave the stress behind, relax, have a sumptuous meal and rest. You could have different meal courses on the table, starting with a hot bowl of soup or a plate of salad, then the entree, and finally some sweet, tea or coffee to round it up. The meal is not supposed to be rushed (it’s not a Passover meal), but to be eaten slowly in a relaxed atmosphere. You could even have someone dish the food and serve the drink for you.

In Psalm 23 verse 5, the Bible says:

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.

In this psalm, David is acknowledging the goodness of God upon his life. Having been delivered times without number from his enemies and eventually assuming the position of king of Israel, David had everything he needed, and he could ask for more just by opening his mouth or waving his palm, or by any method he chose. A table had indeed been prepared for him in the presence of everyone. He could never go hungry of lack anything that money or prestige could buy. He had a crew of servants around him, just waiting for instructions.

I wrote in the past that on many of my trips, I have been privileged to be upgraded to business class on the flight, where the type of service you receive onboard is unmistakably different from what you receive in economy class. Even before you sit down, a crew member is already asking to take your coat and hang it away for you, so it does not get squeezed. As soon as you are seated, a crew member is presenting you with assorted drinks to choose from. After takeoff, the crew will draw the curtain behind your cabin so the economy passengers would not notice the five-star service that is being delivered to you. Then they come with various meal courses and drinks, and they keep refilling your glass and bringing more meals until you are fed-up and say enough. Even then they still gently ask you, are you sure? In contrast, the economy class passengers are struggling with a portion of food that is just enough to ensure they don’t die (of hunger) before landing.

This is the kind of service that God is offering to us as His children. God is saying to you, you deserve rest from your troubles, from your stress and from your anxieties, and don’t worry that the food may not be enough, because your cup will run over. He is saying, with Me, there is no want, no lack, no inadequacy, and no fear that someone else will take what I am giving to you, because this table is set even in the presence of your enemies. He is saying, My blessings will make you rich and there will be no sorrows added, so no inflation or super-high interest rate or economic gloom is potent enough to reduce your portion.

In Genesis chapter 26, the Bible says there was famine in the land and Isaac went to the land of the Philistines in Gerar, which was also affected by the famine. He must have had his eyes set on Egypt, but God told him not to go to Egypt but to stay in Gerar and He would bless him. Isaac obeyed and the Bible says in verses 12 – 14:

Then Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him. The man began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous; for he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. So the Philistines envied him

The Bible says that Isaac began to prosper, and continued prospering, until he became very prosperous, so much that the people of the land envied him. That’s what I call setting a table before him in the presence of his enemies!

Perhaps you are going through a lot, but God is saying I am about to do something new, just be patient and continue to obey me because as I have said in Isaiah 43:19, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth, shall you not know it? God is promising to make a road in the wilderness for you, and rivers in the desert. There is no point looking for methods that are not approved by God, because the Bible says the sorrows of those who seek other gods will multiply. So, don’t go to Egypt. Stay where God says you should stay, and you are about to witness God’s table and an overflowing cup.

 PLEASE ACT NOW:
If you are yet to give your life to Christ, you do not have a covenant with God and His promises do not apply to you. To come under these promises, please surrender your life to Christ today, by praying this prayer:
Lord I know that I am a sinner and I am unable to save myself. I am sorry for my sins and I pray that you please forgive me. I am aware that Your Son Jesus died for my sins and I accept Him as my Lord and savior. I surrender my life unto you from this moment. Please take control of my entire being and help me to be obedient to your Word, going forward. Thank you, Lord, for hearing me. I have prayed in Jesus’ name. Amen.
If you prayed the foregoing prayer, you have just been born again. Please find a Bible believing church in your area and ask to see the pastor. Let him or her know that you have just given your life to Christ and s/he will guide you on next steps in your journey as a child of God. The Lord bless you!
