Do Something New

Deuteronomy 2:1-3

Message No. 0643 | Twitter @GodandUs | www.wisdom-speaks.ca

There was a time when new year resolutions were popular. People were coerced into writing something down or rehearsing something in the mind because a friend, a family member, a colleague, a teacher, or other people would ask you at some point in January: “What’s your new year resolution?” In those days, I always thought of something I wanted to change in the new year. However, I am not able to remember a new year when my resolution survived beyond February or March. Some broke their resolutions within the first ten days of the year.

I have a confession to make: Nothing will change until you are determined to change it. In Deuteronomy chapter 2, Moses began by recalling how Israel was moving around the hill country of Mount Seir over and over. In verses 1 to 3, Moses wrote:

Then we turned back and set out toward the wilderness along the route to the Red Sea, as the Lord had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir. Then the Lord said to me, “You have made your way around this hill country long enough; now turn north.

One could wonder: were they confused regarding the exact location of Canaan? Did they perhaps think that this hill country was Canaan? Well, if they did, at least they would make a plan to divide the land and settle down. Why were they moving round this mountain? Why could even Moses not realize that their journey had become static and device a way to move forward? It took God to wake Moses up to the fact that a lot of time had been wasted in the same environment and their journey was no longer making progress.

Sometimes we are faced with some mountains and are stuck with them without realizing that time is being wasted. Some are faced with the mountain of procrastination. They always make beautiful plans in December regarding how they would improve their education, work harder to earn promotions or to earn more money, start a business, go to Bible school, change their attitudes, stop being proud or arrogant, stop sinning, repent here and repent there, but it’s ten years since they have repeated the same plans and yet, they have made zero progress. For others, it could be the mountain of complaining. They always complain that no one is helping them. They may not be helping themselves, but they are blinded to their own faults and are alive to the faults of others.

Is it perhaps time to move northward? Have you considered how new life would be if you decided to make a real change? If you are uneducated, have you considered actually registering for a course this time around? Perhaps attending classes and interacting with other students would really change your perspective? If you are unemployed, have you considered starting your own business? In this internet age, there are many things you could do as a self-employed person, have you taken a look yet? I have watched many people on YouTube who graduated from the University and could not find a job but dropped their pride and started some of the most elementary types of businesses, like frying bean cakes along busy pedestrian routes and selling to passersby’s. Those who are fortunate to have a car used their cars for Uber and others took actions that changed their lives for good. There are many whom God has blessed through these activities, and they never want to find a 9 – 5 job even if an employer came begging.

If you are busy complaining about the government, what if I told you that you are the government? Aren’t government officials your employees, who are working for you? Who voted the government into power, was it not you? You have been voting the same way for 20 years and yet things are getting worse. Have you considered changing your vote? Are you still accepting to be bribed with tiny pieces of silver while the people you vote to power rob you of your livelihood for the next four years? If you are an employer and your employee has been working hard over the years to ruin your business, wouldn’t you fire the employee?

I’ll repeat my confession: Nothing will change until you are determined to change it. I have a suggestion for every reader this year: Do something new. Don’t be depressed, introduce something exciting to your life this year. God wants to help us, but we must show that we are willing to be helped. There are things within our control that we can change but if we refuse to change those things, we cannot expect that God will force them to change. You can make it this year if you can change it. I pray for God to grant us the courage to advance, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

 PLEASE ACT NOW:
If you are yet to give your life to Christ, you do not have a covenant with God and His promises do not apply to you. To come under these promises, please surrender your life to Christ today, by praying this prayer:
Lord I know that I am a sinner and I am unable to save myself. I am sorry for my sins and I pray that you please forgive me. I am aware that Your Son Jesus died for my sins and I accept Him as my Lord and savior. I surrender my life unto you from this moment. Please take control of my entire being and help me to be obedient to your Word, going forward. Thank you, Lord, for hearing me. I have prayed in Jesus’ name. Amen.
If you prayed the foregoing prayer, you have just been born again. Please find a Bible believing church in your area and ask to see the pastor. Let him or her know that you have just given your life to Christ and s/he will guide you on next steps in your journey as a child of God. The Lord bless you!
